The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. The top two finishers in each group advance automatically, plus the eight best third-placed teams — a total of 32 teams in the knockout phase. From the Round of 16 onwards it is single-elimination, with extra time and penalties if necessary. In total 104 matches are played over 39 days, across 16 venues in three host nations (the United States, Mexico, and Canada). The final is at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday 19 July 2026.
