The Czech Republic reconstituted as Czechia — and back on the world's biggest stage after Euro 2024's brilliant run to the quarter-finals.
Czech football has long been underrated on the global stage. As Czechoslovakia, the nation produced some of Europe's finest teams — the 1962 side reached the World Cup semi-finals, losing to Brazil in a replayed final match that remains controversial to this day. But as an independent Czech Republic, World Cup qualification has been frustratingly elusive since 2006.
The 2026 qualification campaign changed that trajectory. Under Ivan Hašek — who guided them to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with memorable victories over Netherlands and a narrow defeat to Portugal — Czechia showed a new tactical identity: structured defensively, dangerous in transition, and lethal from set pieces. The UEFA playoffs provided their route to North America, and they took it with both hands.
The identity of this Czech team is inseparable from Patrik Schick — arguably the most complete striker in Czech history. His physical presence, link-up play, and eye for goal from distance make him a handful for any defence. He is supported by the tireless Tomáš Souček in midfield — one of the Premier League's most reliable performers — and a compact defensive unit drilled by Hašek.
Czechia navigated UEFA qualification with the momentum of their Euro 2024 run behind them. A second-place finish in their group set up a playoff, where they secured their place in North America. Ivan Hašek's side showed the same qualities that confounded Netherlands in Germany: organisation, spirit, and Schick's clinical edge.
Drawn in Group A alongside host Mexico, South Korea, and South Africa, Czechia will feel they have a genuine chance to advance. Mexico are strong favourites, but South Korea and South Africa are well within reach. Schick vs. any defence in this group is a favourable matchup for Czechia.
Czechia return to the World Cup as a team with nothing to lose and everything to prove. Schick is capable of scoring against any team in Group A, and Hašek has built a coherent unit that performs above the sum of its parts. If they can beat South Africa and take a result against South Korea, the round of 16 is a realistic target — and once there, anything is possible. Czechia's tournament ceiling is the quarter-finals; their floor is the group stage exit. Both are plausible.
