Tournament History
Denmark's World Cup story is brief but memorable. Their 1986 Mexico debut featured the legendary Preben Elkjær and ended in the round of 16. The 1998 France tournament—Peter Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup's final appearance—delivered quarter-final elimination against Brazil in a thrilling 3-2 match that remains one of the tournament's great performances despite the loss.
The 2018 Russia campaign under Åge Hareide saw Denmark reach the round of 16 before losing on penalties to Portugal. Kasper Schmeichel's penalty save against Croatia in the group stage earned a vital point. The 2022 Qatar tournament began with Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest during the group match against Finland—a moment that stopped the football world before Erikson survived and recovered. Denmark won that match but failed to advance from their group.
The post-Eriksen era brings fresh challenges. Morten Hjulmand replaced Kasper Hjulmand with a mandate to evolve Denmark's traditionally defensive identity toward more proactive possession football. The 2024 European Championship group stage—containing England, Serbia, and Slovenia—will serve as an important test of whether this Denmark squad can compete consistently against elite European nations.
