Tournament History

Greece's tournament history is the most dramatic of any nation with so few World Cup appearances. Three tournaments — 1994, 2010, and 2014 — sandwiched around the most famous European Championship win in history at Euro 2004.

The 1994 World Cup in the United States was Greece's first appearance at any major tournament. Drawn in Group D with Argentina, Nigeria, and Bulgaria, the side managed a 0-0 draw with the Super Eagles but lost the other two matches and exited at the group stage. It was a learning experience that laid the foundation for what was to come.

Ten years later, Otto Rehhagel's side produced one of football's great upsets by winning Euro 2004 in Portugal. The Ethniki conceded just one goal in five knockout games — a 1-0 win over the hosts in the final decided by Angelos Charisteas's header. The defensive system that carried Greece to the title became known as 'Greek football' and influenced the next decade of European football. Yet the World Cup that followed, in 2006, saw Greece eliminated in the group stage of the tournament they would have been defending three years later.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa was a group-stage exit, but the 2014 tournament in Brazil was Greece's most successful. After a creditable group stage — a 3-0 loss to Colombia, a goalless draw with Japan, and a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast — Greece faced Costa Rica in the Round of 16. The match went to penalties after a 1-1 draw; Greece lost the shootout 5-3 and exited at the last-16 stage.

Since 2014, the post-Rehhagel decline has been steep. Greece failed to qualify for Euro 2016, the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup, and Euro 2024. The 2026 cycle ended in the UEFA playoffs, where the side was unable to reach the inter-confederation stage. A return to the World Cup is the obvious target for the next cycle.

Road to 2026

Greece's path through UEFA qualification for the 2026 World Cup followed the expanded format introduced for the tournament: a 12-group league phase, with group winners qualifying directly and runners-up entering the playoffs alongside the best-ranked Nations League teams. Drawn in a competitive group, Greece's league phase featured mixed results — competitive home performances against stronger opposition, but a number of away defeats that kept them just outside the direct qualification places.

The playoff route offered a second chance, but the draw was unkind. Greece faced a tough single-leg tie in the UEFA playoff semi-final and, despite taking the game to extra time, was eliminated — ending the 2026 cycle without a World Cup place for the sixth consecutive tournament.

For manager Ivan Jovanović, the focus shifts immediately to the 2026–27 UEFA Nations League and the start of the next European Championship qualifying campaign. The young core — Ioannidis, Bakasetas, Masouras, Giannoulis — has enough quality to be competitive; the question is whether the defensive solidity and set-piece threat that defined the 2004 and 2014 sides can be rebuilt around them.

2026 World Cup Prediction

Greece did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The 2026 cycle was a realistic chance to break a long absence, but the playoff loss confirmed another tournament watching from home. The honest assessment for 2026 is that Greece are a competitive mid-table UEFA side — good enough to make the playoff round regularly, but not yet good enough to win it. Reaching Euro 2028 and then the 2030 World Cup is the realistic next target.
